AMERICAN POLITICS.

REPUBLICAN CAMPAIGN.

SHERMAN V. ROOSEVELT.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright.

(Received August 19, 11 p.m.)

New York, August 19. President Taft had an important interview yesterday with Senator Sherman (Vice-President of the United States), who declared that he had no intention of withdrawing from the chairmanship of the New York State Convention in Mr. Roosevelt's favour, but promised that the New York Convention's platform would strongly approve of President Ta ft's admini st rat ion.

Mr. Sherman urged President Taft to write a letter for early publication to sound the keynote for the Congressional campaign, especially upholding the Payne tariff. He pleaded for an old-fashioned Republican campaign on old-fashioned lines. It is understood that President Taft promised to write the letter, but will frame it in accordance with his own judgment. It is understood that Mr. Sherman and President Taft agreed that it was impossible for Mr. Joseph Cannon to be re-elected Speaker. The progressive Republicans are vigorously working for the control of the New York Convention to secure Mr. Roosevelt's chairmanship. Mr. Roosevelt has arranged a strenuous speech-making tour starting on the 27th inst.

Tlio Republican Committee* nominated the United vStat.es Vice-President (Mr. Sherman) to the temporary Chairmanship of tho New York Stale Convention, rejecting Mr. Roowclt, despite President Taft's disapproval and opposition. The committee's action is interpreted by the New York press as proving that the party will not allow Mr. Kowevelt to outline the Republican State policies.
