Stoning is in, progress on the drive north on the Young New Zealand reef in the No. 3 level, the width of '/ ore exposed being 6ft. Some first-class ore y has bosn broken, showing dabs of gold. ".._ ' >• ' ROSS GOLDFIELDS.' : [BT TELEGRAPH.—-PRESS , ASSOCIATION.] '; Hokitika, Sunday. - The boisterous weather experienced hers; during the past few days has been the causa of the Ross >;Goldfields': transmission : line .!; breaking in : a number of places. 1 This ' will \- - further delay the opening up of the mine. /.// •'';' . * - notes. ..,-;- \ No. 1 level in the Tairua Gem mine has /; been advanced 20ft, making 262 ft driven. to / date, and leaving only f 38ft' to Ibe driven to jintersect the Cave . reef ; > providing the ' reef 1 j maintains ' the same underlie at": this depth / (about 260 ft). The country being penetrated §s is still of a very superior quality, ; and 1 the •/ quartz and silica veins are becoming morefg numerous as the drive proceeds. , , In the Tairua Leads mine .the' level has ;■; been extended 12ft. 'A quartz formation of/ a rubbly nature, some 3ft .in :i width, has been intersected, its course and underlie V, being similar to ■;' that [■ of t the c reef ' lately. • reported. Occasionally a small prospect can v be obtained by _ panning. , A portion of the • lode still remains the back present/ face. The country generally shows improve-! menfc. . . /.',;.'" _ /!'.- . During the past weeki the low level in thrt Tairua Golden Hills mine has j been extended) :■.,■ 34ft, making the total length of the tunnel. 993 ft. The country is of an excellent claiss,, being well oxidised, and, the lay is becoming; more pronounced, the heads bearing a> parallel position to -the strike and dip of the No. 1 lode. This, says the manager, iai an important feature, as it doubtless indii ; cates the downward trend of hte main lode to and beyond this level.: A commencement has been made to extend the north end on No. 1 lode at N0.2 level, as the" values there . have shown considerable improvement dur- : ing the last few feet of driving. Crushing;; operations were resumed on the 14th inst. -

In the Tairua Monarch mine operations are confined to driving on No. 3 reef. Throe faces are in ■>' progress, the total distance driven on the reef to date being 75ft. . The drive northwards is being continued along the footwall of the reef. The values are improving, and by pounding the stone excellent dish prospects can be obtained. In the south face the reef is the full width of the drive, and the ore broken shows strong colours of gold. In the drive north from the main level the reef is 15in wide, T the ore broken showing fair dish prospects. The manager has been prospecting along the outcrop of No. 2 reef, which on the surfaceshows a width of about sft, with two good walls. The formation is of a; mullocky nature, intermixed with quartz stringers, from lin to 3iniin thickness. Fair dish prospects can be, obtained for the full width. The hangingwall and ] footwall .show excellent dish prospects. , ■,-.<','•■- si •;■-.■'-'
