FUNERAL OF MR QUIRKE.
A TOWN IN MOURNING. [BY t TEUJGBATH. —rRESS ASSOCIATION.] . J.' Pahiatua, Thursday. The funeral of the late Mr. Michael Quirke (who was.: shot in. mistake for Powelka, by Mr. W. ' H. Overton, at Palmerston, on Monday night), took .place this afternoon in drenching rain. A preliminary service' in the Catholic Church was conducted by the Revs. Fathers McKenna and Hickson, the latter being a cousin of the deceased. A large number of people were present, including Mr. Overton. The coffin was covered with wreaths. Signs of mourning wore general in the town, and a large number of people followed the hearse to the cemetery.
It is stated that the eagerness of the late Mr, , Quirke to engage in the search for Powelka is accounted for by the fact that he was a schoolmate and personal friend of the late Sergeant Maguire.
