COAL MINE ACCIDENT.

MINER'S NARROW ESCAPE.

Huntly, Thursday. A serious accident, whereby Mr. Edward Sayes, secretary of the Waikato Miners' Union, had. his right leg fractured between the knee and the ankle, occurred in Ralph's mine about one o'clock to-day. Saye* was working at the face of his bord, in hard coal, when he saw a large mass of coal in the act of breaking away. In order to save the upper part of his body he sprang off the His head and chest thus escaped injury, but the lower portion of the-leg was pinned between the coal and the floor, with the result that the leg sustained a compound fracture. Acting under the directions of the injured man, his mate (B. Hart) rendered first aid, and then Sayea was taken to his lodgings, where he was treated by Dr. East. He leaves to-niffht for the Hamilton Hospital..
