STREET PAVING.

Sir,ln reference to your paragraph regarding paving some of the principal oity ' Streets, might I, as one of those who will have to pay, suggest before any particular form of paving is adopted that the following information in regard to cach bo obtained: —1. Detailed cost of laying, includ- / ing foundations; (2) annual cost for mainten-• ■£ ance; (3) annual cost, for cleansing; a" , these per square yard. We have asphalt and macadam in Auckland, wood-blocking in Wellington, Sydney, etc., so that these particulars as regards them should not be difficult to obtain. Stone setts have been so long obsolete that to get similar information in regard to that form of paving may bo more difficult. Still, in the archives of some • old city such information may be preserved. Our city fathers have made so many griev- ; ; ous blunders that, it is to be hoped that the ■ fullest inquiry will be mado before adopting ■: any particular form of paving, and that tho end kept in view will be low cost, both in - laying and in upkeep, . combined. witb./V'. efficiency. _ . RATEPATEB. .
