A NIGHT IN THE CELLS.
\ SUGGESTION TO JUSTICES,
At the Police Court yesterday morning a man named Walter Charles Kirby, rftio had been remanded on a charge of drunkenness, made some strong .remarks with regard to the state of "Mount ' Eden gaol. The cells,' he said, : were unfit for habitation, the wooden cells especially being full of vermin. Other prisoners who had spent a few days in the institution would, he said, endorse his remarks, and lie urged that it was time something was done. x ';.''-.:'■:* ' ', , ' "- : - Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., the presiding magistrate, said complaints had previously been made to him, and he had mentioned the matter; to those responsible for the state of the gaol. "If," ho said, "the visiting justices could see their way to spend a night or two in the cells complained of, they would then bo able to accurately estimate the amount of truth in ; the assertion, v He would telegraph :o the Minister for Justice asking that an investigation be made. .-. ;
