CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING,

Roache) has r* ee'ved 45° entries up to the present f or the forthcoming championship meeting, to he held at Irentham next month. Ho expects that the total entry on March 4 (the ST, S? WiU bQ «9*«| between 550 and 600. Last year 525 competitor,, entered, and that number constituted ' a record. There arc'3s2 entries from Wei lington 45 from Auckland. 23 from South Canterbury, 26 from Christehurch, and 43 from Otago. Ex-cliamnions who have signified their intention to compote include Lieutenant Duncan, Millcrton (last vear'3 champion); -Sergeant J. W. Chin? ™ a ™ae = Lieutenant Irvine, Nelson • Rifle! man J. W. Milrov, Nelson; Rifleman 11. J. King, Opaki; and Rifleman G. Hvde Opaki. In addition., there will be several brilliant marksmen who have been absent from, the last two meetings. These in elude Lieutenant Sandford, of Christcliurch" who went to Risky in 1905, and Lieutenant A. McKenzic, of the Queen's Rifles Oamaru, who was a member of the same team.

The New South Wales - team' will arrive by the \Y arrimoo to-morrow morning. The men are in command of Lieutenant Dakins secretary of the National Rifle Association of New South Wales. Captain Mabin, of the Dominion Rifle Association, will meet the vessel and extend a welcome 'to tho team on behalf of his association. Arrangements have -been made lor the team to Stay at the Occidental Hotel, and all the men will be made honorary members of the Civil Service. Club during their stay here, •I he ofheere will also be made honorary members of the Garrison Officers' (Ink Lieutenant-Colonel Hughes, chief ranee officer, of the Dominion Rifle Association will arrive on Friday in charge of the Wanganui Rifle Battalion, which is to take part 111 the forthcoming manoeuvres- He will not return to Wanganui with his troops, but after the encampment will proceed to 1 rentham in connection with the business of the association. The Permanent Artillery, to the strength of 35 members, will go into camp on Monday, February's, to pitch camp and carrv out other duties. The range will be specially owned for practice from next Thursday" for the benefit of the Australians, who will be given every opportunity to " get their eve m for the opening day. The range will be open for general practice from Saturday next, but no tent accommodation will b<j available until next Monday at the earliest A new system of field service telephones ii being installed throughout • the ranges These are being erected by the Permanent Aitillery, under the supervision of Captain Duigan, engineer staff officer, and it is thought that the new system will be a great improvement and prove a boon tc the association and competitors alike.
