SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND.

Sydney, February 21. , Tub population of Sydney and suburbs at the end of last, year was 605,900, an increase of 13,800 on the previous year. ■
Marriages increased by 393 and births • totalled 15,461, the highest on record, illegitimates numbering 10 per cent. Deaths
numbered 10.26 per 1000 of population, the lowest rate on record. . '
Sydney now occupies seventh place in the list of great cities of the British Empire, Melbourne being tenth,- according to last year's figures, but there has been a considerable increase since then, which may alter her position. The population of the chief cities of the Empire is as follows:—v
