VAN SMASHED BY A TRAIN.

Palmerston North, Monday. A train from Paekakariki collided with a covered-in van at the West-street crossing this morning. The van was occupied by an Assyrian: named Josephs, his wife and " two children. The occupants were thrown in all directions by the force ,of the collision. The woman and children escaped unhurt, but Josephs sustained a compound fracture of the ankle. The horse was destroyed by the police immediately after the accident,, and the trap was demolished. Accounts differ as to the causo of the accident, some stating that the conveyance was driven on th« lino in front of the train, while others ascribe it to the restlessness of the horse.
