SMELL OF PAINT.
A CREW'S OBJECTION. SHIP'S DEPARTURE DELAYED. ■■ [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN , CORRESPONDENT. ] - : Wellington, Monday. The crew of the Union Steam Ship Company's steamer Poherua exhibited decided aversion to the odour of fresh paint on Saturday. Everything ' was in readiness for the boat to sail early in the afternoon for,. Grey mouth, after an extensive overhaul at Wellington, but the men forward found their,- olfactory sense offended when they . came to instal their effects -in?. the fo'c'sle. The paint was quite, dry, and it, ; was . pointed out that ■when the vessel was travelling at 10 knots an hour . the - draught forced, through, , the • ventilators would soon remove the } smell. No such.v pleading availed, however, and a deadlock. ensued; Ultimately it was conceded to the men that the ship should wait in: port till 11 p.m.,' and that all means of admitting fresh air should be used. ; This course was agreed to by the crfew, and the Poherua got away at 11 o'clock.
