PLAGUE OF BEETLES.
One evening recently, while a Wyndham settler was enjoying the air, and at the same time having a chat : with a neighbour, he was startled by two clouds of insects that settled on the ground close by him (says the Wyndham Farmer). They proved to be a couple of swarms of a species of beetle, end they . were there in thousands. Next morning, remembering that a message had come from North Otago to the effect that " a cloud of brown beetles had visited gardens at Ardgowan on a recent night, and caused consternation in" the orchards, . . . the visitation resembling a dust cloud," the local man hied to the spot where he saw the swarms alight., and there picked up quite a number of dead brown beetles, which had evidently been suffocated by the horde pressing upon them. The settler in question has preserved some of the beetles, and it certainly would be interesting lo know, if possible, whether these insects are identical with the variety that plagued North Otago.
