MINING NEWS.

OLD HAURAKI.

At the 400 ft lovel in tho Old Hauraki mine, Coromandcl, the rise has been put up another 6ft, and tho roof showed favourable* indications, though no gold. At the 300 ft level tho leading stopo north on No. 9 reef has been advanced 10ft, and colours of gold oontinuo to bo seen when breaking down. Tho leading stopo south was advanced Bft, but no gold was scon. It has been decided to make a connection from this level with the winze sunk from tho 220 ft level on Legge's reef. "By doing this," says the manager, " wo shall determine its existence or otherwiso at this level. North of tho break there will bo 6ft to drive, and about 25ft to rise. Tho drive has been advanced 4ft. '* NOTES. According to the manager of the Tairua Golden Hills mine, the low level has been advanced 29ft, making 588 ft driven. The character of the country remains about tho same. In No. 2 level, driving southward on the course of No. 1 lode, one shift is employed, but owing to the somewhat hard nature ofthe lode progress is rather slow. Tho foot wall portion of the . lodo looks very well, and is showing an improvement. Above tho lovel No. 2 stopo is in progress north and south of No. 2 rise. In both of these stopes the reef looks well. All preliminary works aro now practically completed, and tho company's operations at the mine will now bo almost exclusively confined to stoping and the further development of the lode.

At the Goldwater section in the Glamorgan mine tho reef, which is being driven on south, is fully 6ft wide. The greater portion of the quartz is, the manager states, of a kindly description, containing oxide of manganese and a little copper pyrites which is just making its first appearance. Values in the form of blue sulphide are noticeablo daily. In the Herald section the cleaning out of the winzo was completed during tho week. The dopth from surface is 20ft. A commencement was made to drivo in a southerly direction towards tho Silver King workings. A portion of tho reef, which is fully 3ifc wide, was broken down on Saturday, and showed a fair percentage -of bluo sulphide well intermixed through the quartz from roof to floor of drive. A -■.'.;

Tho south drive in the Champion mine has been extended 62ft from the pass. Tho men are still on a large reef formation, which corresponds with the largo blow" at. ,the entrance, of the ! creek level. Tho manager < states that some of tho ston© looks very promising, and that in pounding same a very nice prospect of gold can bo got in the dish, also in the loose rubble To prove this end of tho property the manager recommends that a further distance of 40ft bo driven, and a crosscut put in the east wall. Ho has secured a further 260z of amalgam from the headings and tailings, making a total of 113oz in crushing 100 tons from the Champion reef. Ho has also put through 25 tons from the Dyke, which produced 13£oz of amalgam.
