The Hon. J. McGowan, M.L.C., who arrived in this city from Wellington on Sunday morning, left for Rotorua yesterdav morning. Ho returns to Auckland about- Friday next.

In reply to a wire sent by the Hon. C. H. Mills to Sir John Logan Campbell, congratulating tlve " Father of Auckland on the attainment of his 93rd birthday, the following characteristic letter, written by Sir John has been received " Father Time still keeps sharpening his scythe, before which we must be mown, 'lruly he is in no hurry."

Word was received yesterday ,by the Hon. J. T. Paul that Mr. Will. Crooks, Labour M.P. for Woolwich, and a member of the London County Council, who is at present in Sydney, will arrive in Wellington from Rotorua 1 by* the Main Trunk express on November 25. - Mr. Crooks will leave on November 29 for Christ church. He is accompanied by Mrs. Crooks, who is Mayor of Poplar. The Mavor of Wellington has. decided to accord Mr. and Mrs. Crooks an official welcome.

Mr. John Callnan. a colonist of over 70 years* standing, died at- the residence of his niece (Mrs. James Wallace), Green Lane, yesterday morning. The deceased gentleman was born in New South Wales in 1837, and arrived at the Bay of Islands with his parents in the same year. After a short residence there the Callnan family, as the result, of the native rising, removed to Auckland, where the deceased has resided ever since. Mr, Callnan served in the. Maori war, and on peace Wins restored he started in business on his own account, conducting a successful bootmaking % establishment in Queen-street for manv years. Mr. Callnan was a man of strict business integrity, and, having spent practically the whole of his life in this city, he had a large circle of .acquaintances, who will regret his death.
