MINING NEWS.

, WAIOTAHI G.M. CO. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Monday. The manager of the Waiotahi Gold Mining Company reports for the week as follows: — No. 6 Level: The stopes on the dropper above this level have been in progress, and colours of gold are occasionally seen. No. 5 Level: Tho fifth stope on the Cure reef has been carried west of the rise for a distance of 50ft. The reef at this point is about 15in in width, and good colours of gold have been seen. The stopes on the dropper have,,also been in hand. Intermediate Level: The drive east from tho rise on the junction of the main reef and hangingwall leader is in a distance of 22ft. Tho main reef is increasing in width, but no gold has been seen during the week. No. 4 Level: A third stope west from the rise on the hanging-wall leader. has been started. Good dabs of gold are seen, and a few pieces of pickod stone have been obtained. The second stop** east • from the crosscut is now nearly completed. The crosscut into the main reef from the hangingwall drive is in a distane of 9ft, but no gold has yet been seen in the main portion of the reef. . • • , THAMES DEEP LEVELS. Yesterday the directors of the Victoria Gold Mining Company signed the Thames deep levels agreement, leaving now only the signature of tho Kuranui-Caledonian Company to be obtained. The authorisation to sign on behalf of this company has not yet been received from the London directors, but it is expected to arrive to-day. .' v ■ CHAMPION RETURN. 't "J The secretary of tho Champion Mines reports receipt of tho following telegram from the mine manager:—"Finished crushing; banked 270z 17dwt .bullion: approximate value £68." " ~1. • GOLDEN BELT. The half-yearly meeting of shareholders in the Golden Belt Gold Mining Company was held yesterday afternoon, Hon. E. Mitchelson, chairman of directors, presiding. The half-yearly report, which was adopted, stated that work on the Consolation section had been discontinued. The results of several crushings from the Bluffs, though showing low values, were satisfactory, and satisfied the directors that with a more economical manner of transit to the battery ore? from here could be worked profitably on a large scale. Driving was in progress from No. 1 level on a reef leading towards ' the Bluffs,' and as this lode showed good values, the effect of its junction with the Bluffs ft, a depth of 300 ft from the surface was a matter of great importance to the company. Though results in tho past had been disaopointing to all, the directors were hopeful that the work now in hand would disclose sufficient to reward the shareholders for their patience. \. £ Mr. H. T. Gorrie and Mr. H. H. Adams wero re-elected to the directorate, und Mr. R. E. Isaacs as auditor. v ■

.TAIRUA EXTENDED. , The half-yearly general meeting of shareholders in the Tairua Extended GoW Mining. Company was convened for yesterday, but lapsed for want of a quorum. Tho directors' half-yearly report stated that Mr. E. F. Adams had recommended an intermediate level being put 4n about ?20ft below tho surface level. This work had just boon commenced,, and 250 ft of driving should seo the reef intersected. The directors were hopeful that theso operations will open up a fair block of ground, besides furnishing valuable information for the low level work. Tho directors to retire by rotation are Messrs. R. Mitchelson and H. H. Adams, and they, being eligible, offer themselves for re-election. "fGLAMORGAN. The secretary of the Glamorgan Gold Milliner Company has received the .'following wire from the mine manager:—" Herild winze clear; reef 3ft wide, showing hluo sulphide in quartz." NOTES.* - ' ' The ore being broken out in the Now Monowai mine, Waiomo, is of fair quality. There aro about 25 tons ready to be forwarded to Thames. Last week the drive on the Cambria reef of the Thames mine was advanoed a distance of 16ft. The reef was looking very well, especially the hangingwall portion. In this 'part of the lode some nice bright minerals and also bunches of antimony were met with. , Th© country encasing the lode was also of a good description. *.

The drive in the Durbar mine has advanced 15ft through first-class country. The -reef in thp face has opened out, and'is now 2ft wide. It looks very promising. For .the last 100 ft of driv&ig the - reef h\s beenstrongest at the floor of the drive, so.'the manager considers there is good block to be worked underfoot, as well as overhead. _

In the Eureka section of' the Blyth low level of the Kuranui mine, Thames, the drive has now been advanced 72ft to the face. . Last week the men were working >n promising andesite country, interlaced with mineral leads and pockets of pyrites. The country, was of a favourable class, .and country rock was met with on Tuesday last.' On the Waitangi side of the Shellback reef the winze has been sunk 58ft.

The winze in the Old Alburnia mine, Thames, has now reached a depth of 29ft.' The reef is 18in in width of fairly goodlooking stone. Colours and dabs of gold are being seen in breaking down operations on the eastern side of the winze. The rise is now 23ft from the back of the drive. The. reef is 15in in width, and the hangingwall portion looks well, although no gold has b<jen 5 seen for the last two breakings down.

At the Tairua Gem mine the low level has been advanced 44ft, making 216 ft driven. The country is still of a first-class description, and quartz and silica veins are in strong evidence in the present face. The prospecting tunnel has now been extended 20ft, the country being of the same favourable description as that in the low level.

Driving at the intermediate level of the Mountain King mine was advanced a further distance of sft last week. The country was still a nice class of andesite, interlaced with numerous mineral sea.ms. The last 6ft of driving saw the reef split up into stringers, but it had every appearance of • coming together again as the level advanced ahead. In the stopos the reel was a nice compact bodv cf ore, averaging 12in in width, and showing strong dabs of gold well distributed through the ore when taken down.

In tho Pride of Tokatea mine No. 6 stop© on the cross lodo has been carried along 47ft, to the rise, and a start made for No. 7 stope. The country shows,, nioe minerals,, and during, the week blotches of gold were Been in tho ore broken , down. Tho drive to test tho footwall lode at the low level has been advanced 12ft. The country continues of a first-class description for gold, but up to the present nothing of value has been met with. .....

The southern crosscut in the Tairua Broken Hills mine has now been driven 285 ft. On Thursday last a mulloeky crosscourso was intersected, but it only gave a few colours in the dish. The big reef has been penetrated a further distance of 18ft. The quartz at present shows an improvement in appearance, and some of the ribs look very promising, though there is no sign of the hangingwall - yet. The intermediate crosscut has been driven lift in first-clans country, and a small loader giving fair dish prospects intersected.

The low level in the Coromandel mine has been driven a further 12ft, making 19ft driven since starting. The country at this point is of a more settled nature, and is very favourable for gold. The reef in this level is now a compact body of qiuirtz, and by appearance should make gold »t any time. The manager has finished timbering No. 2 level, and has started to • rise overhead, where some good stone was obtained by a former company. In breaking down a portion of the reef at this spot he secured a small parcel of picked stotte, 'some of which might be Classed as specimens. There are several other reefs in this property which carry loose gold by washing, but the manager has not yet.had time to prospect them. In one of these, reefs gold was obtained, in tho upper -workings, and a low level was started, which should give considerable backs. This level has Seen driven several hundred feet, but tho reef was not cut. The manager considers this level a good asset, as he is informed that It would not take much further driving to cut this reef.
