RIFLE MEETING.

• FIRST REGIMENT -AUCKLAND V< ; . MOUNTED RIFLES. \.. \, Onb of tho most interesting sights on the King's Birthday is to be seen at the Penrose Rifle Range, the centre of interest yesterday being the annual " shoot" of the First Regiment Auckland Mounted Rifles." Tho men of this regiment have a reputation for the interest they tako in any matters their officers suggest for the- welfare of volunteer,ins;, and yesterday was no exception, -the number of-entries being about 165. There wero some very interesting finishes.* -.: Tho success of the meeting was very largely duo to the untiring efforts of Captain . Nutsford, adjutant First Regiment A.M.R., and Regimental Quartermaster-Sergeant Woods, who had both done their utmost to have all matters as complete as possible.. A very successful day was their reward, no dotail having been neglected. Major Bloomfield (regimental staff) was the officer ..in charge of tho range, while Captain McKenzie very successfully carried out tho most important position of officer commanding firing point. - Besides; the officers abovementioned, Captains. Bent, Wyman, and Potter,: Lieutenants Wilkinson, Holden, Atkinson, Shaw, Litchfield, and Richardson were also present. Every squadron in the regiment was represented, the prize money (about £40) being fairly evenly distributed, the Franklin Mounted Rifles and the Auckland Mounted Rifles being most successful. Tho following donated trophies: —Mr. C. D. Gray (Mayor of Auckland), Colonel Holgato . (president), Major Bloomfiold (vice-president), Mrs. J. Potter, Mr. F. H. Jackson, Mr. A. Kohn, Warehousemen's Association, ' Messrs. Ormistori and Co., Hallcnstein Bros., Stewart Dawson and Co. The competitors were divided into two' classes, viz., "A" Class, marksmen of year ending February, 1909, and trained men, who have won a prize of over 15s in valuo at '_ a. previous -meeting,; and >- B" Class, trained men and recruits who have not won a prize of 15s or over. The .programme consisted, of threo matches, No. 1, snapshooting, 200 yds, seven shots, disappearing targets, exposed four seconds. . The winner of this event in Class "A" was Lieut. Litchfield, of tho Franklin Mounted Rifles, with the splendid score of 32 out of a possible 35. In the "B" Class, Private McCormick was the winner with 29 points. In Match No. 2, the-President's, seven shots each at 200 yds' and 500 yds, Bisley targets, Sergeant-Major EHingham (Auckland Mounted Rifles) was tho winner in "A" class, -with a score of 63", and Quartermaster-Sergeant Dow (Franklin Mounted Rifles) tho winner in. "B " class, with 59. ' In Match No. 3, Vice-presi-dent's, 600yds-and 700 yds, seven shots each range, , Bisloy targets. Sergeant Bryan (Waiuku Mounted Rifles) was first with 59 points,' in " A" class, and Private Potter, with 54, won the "B " class..
