According to Mr. Parata, M.P., who attended the old identities' banquet at Blenheim, the time has arrived when the Maoris must seriously engage in the cultivation of their lands. What was keeping the Maoris back was lack of example by the chiefs in various hapus. He went on to say that when the Maoris awoke to the necessity for improving their lands, they would prove equally competent cultivators as their pakeha brothers.
