THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT.

Wellington*, Tuesday.
The Prime Minister stated in the House of Representatives this afternoon that he proposed to introduce the Financial Statement on Wednesday night week. ,
MEMBERS' QUESTIONS.
Mr. Poland is asking the Minister for Lands whether he will give instructions to the surveyors who are engaged in subdividing the Hauraki Plains for settlement purposes to reserve a sufficient area of land along the course of the future railway line from Paeroa to Pokeno. Mr. Glover has given notice to ask the Minister in charge of the Cook Islands whether he will place a sum of £500 on the Estimates to enable a passage to" be cut through the reef at the island of Mangaia so that the residents may have better facilities for loading and discharging cargo.
. JOTTINGS. ; On account of the King's Birthday, Parliament will not sit next Tuesday. , The total cost to .the • State of the Statutes Compilation Commission was £5625. Sir Robt. Stout, Dr. Fitohett, and Mr. W. S. Reid received £1413 each.
A return presented, to Parliament today shows that there are 143,243 landholders in New Zealand. The number who pay land tax is 24,629. " There are 113 land-holders who pay £500 and over in land tax. Dr. Makgill, Government bacteriologist, reports tliat the difficulties with regard to the weakness of the vaccine lymph, mentioned in last year's report, have been to a great extent overcome. _Tlie principal cause of failure was found to be. a 'very simple matter, namely, the sudden changes in the temperature to which the lymph was exposed. •
