A BAR TO SETTLEMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Rotortja, Tuesday. During his visit here last week, the Hon. Mr. Ngata met the Maoris, and discussed with them the repeal of the Thermal Springs Act, for which the Hon. Jas. Carroll has a Bill drawn up ready for tho consideration of Parliament. Tho natives were divided in their opinion, but the major part favoured the repeal of the Act. For many years this Act has been regarded as a great bar to the spread of settlement in the Hot Lakes district, and its repeal should do much to facilitate tho disposal of the large areas of native lands still locked up, and enable the Maoris to sell the freehold if they see fit.
