The retention of the banner by the New Zealand team has been anticipated since the results of the first day of the carnival were made known. When the team won in Hobart in February of last year the athletes of the Dominion were jubilant. The present party, however, were, when they left the Dominion, : considered a forlorn hope, the withdrawal of such good men as Haskins, H. St. A. Murray, and Wallace being a big loss. Therefore the present position is all the more meritorious. It was not expected that the New Zealanders, except in two or three instances, Could succeed against the Australasian representatives.
