By Telegraph.—Press Association.— London*, August 19. The Australian eleven commenced the* 3Qth match of their tour to-day at Canterbury, where they met the Kent eleven. There was an attendance of 6000.

The weather was bright and breezy, and though rain fell yesterday the wicket was in good order. The game was a little late in opening, owing to the Australians having to travel . down from London.

Mason won. the toss, from ; Noble, and opened with Seymour, and Humphries. Hopkins opened the attack, and Seymour quickly got to work, knocking 10 off the first over. The bowler had his revenge in the second, however, clean bowling him with one to which the- batsman played forward, and was beaten by the break : I—lß—l4.

Hopkins was bumping slightly, but otherwise the wicket was good. Day joined Humphries, and a spell of steady bowling and careful baiting followed, 60 going up for an hour's play. With seven more on the board, Humphries lifted one from Whitly to long-on, where Ransford brought off a good catch. He had been in for 70 minutes for his 21 runs, and played a sound innings : — 67—21. ~

Hutchings came next ; and had made nine when he tried to drive Whitty out of the ground, and had his middle stump removed : 3— —9.

Day and Woolley were partnered till the luncheon adjournment, when the total was 124. The century was scored in 95 minutes. Several changes of bowling were tried.

On resuming, Day added 18, when Carter dismissed him with. a catch on the leg side of the wicket. His cricket was free and faultless, and was characterised by strong off-side play. He batted 125 minutes and gave a chance to be thrown out' to McAlister at 73. He hit nine fours :. Four for 193.

Woolley fell to an e,asy catch at midon. During his 85.minutes at the wicket he did some brilliant driving, and his score included two sixes (from one over of Armstrong's) and eight fours : Five for 201. ':.

Frequent changes in the .bowling were made by the Australian captain. The second century was hoisted for 150 minutes' play.

Mason and Prest, during a partnership , lasting 40 minutes, carried the total to 264, when the former was caught in the slips off Noble's first over after the tea adjournment. He gave a chance to Armstrong, off Noble, when 26. Whitty resumed bowling at 282, and his first over, without addition to the score, secured both Prest's and Huish's wickets.
