BOXING.

TOMMY BURNS V. TOM LEES. Tommy Burns and party returned to Auckland by the Rotorua express yesterday afternoon. A show was given on Thursday evening at Hamilton, when a packed house greeted Burns and his sparring partners. Last evening Tommy Burns and, Tom Lees wore acquainted by the officials of the Northern Boxing Association of the fact that they could not sanction a contest under their supervision, in which there were side wagers or bets. The men have, therefore, decided to give a third exhibition at His Majesty's on Tuesday evening. HAMILTON ASSOCIATION. An amateur boxing association has been formed at Hamilton. There are already over 50 members, of which the officials arc: Patron, the Mayor of Hamilton (Mr. -J. A. Young); president, Mr. Norden; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. Bright, Molesworth, Hogg, King, Burrow, Burns-Smith, C. Innes, T. Brown, J. Murray, and Bates; hon. treasurer, Mr. Norden; hon. secretary, Mr. De L'lsle; hon. medical officer, Dr. Going; timekeepers, Messrs. 0. Innes and Tristram; official seconds, Messrs. Murray and Thompson ; and chairman of committees, Mr. De L'lsle. The association propose to hold a tournament as soon as their affiliation to the N.B.A. is completed and their registration, effected. It is improbable that G. Watchon, of Palmerston North, the selected welter-weight representative of the Dominion at the Australasian amateur meeting in Sydney on September 25 and 27, will be able to spare the time to make the trip. The match for the light-weight championship of Australia between Jack McGowan and R. Greenshields was decided at Ballarat recently. According to one account, Greenshields held the advantage up to the thirteenth round, when McGowan rallied. Both men finished full of vigour in the twentieth and final round, and the referee gave the verdict to McGowan. amid an uproar. The latter showed signs of much punishment. After tho verdict was announced Greenshields stepped to the front of tho stage and said: " Gentlemen, I ask you whether you think I lost to-night?" There was a unanimous " No" from '. all the. house., The referee stated that'..though cautioned for " palming," Greenshields took no notice, otherwise *-l"» decision might have been different. ,\ ■
