POLICE COURT NEWS.
THREE MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.
,At the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. F. H. Pickering and H. A. Gordon, J.IYs, a case against Thomas Chappell was heard, in which it was alleged that Chappell went to the residence of his son-in-law, Joseph Cuncliffe, in Upper Queenstreet, where his wife lived, broke three panes of glass, assaulted hie wife, and used obscene language. His son-in-law, daughter, and wife gave evidence. Three months' gaol was the sequel. Mr. Endean appeared for the accused.
DRUNKENNESS. One first offender for insobriety was fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprison- • ment; another, who did not appear, had his bail estreated; Susan Tracy Pvle, a second offender, was convicted and discharged ; Andrew Nielson was sentenced to 14 /lavs' gaol; Joseph Edward Branigan was fined 40s, with an alternative of 14 days' imprisonment; Thomas Solan, a man with ft long list of who had given his name as " James Kelly, and appeared before the Court earlier in the morning and remanded, was fined £3, with the option of a month's imprisonment. : VAGRANCY. George Thomas Hutton was deemed to be a rogue and vagabond, and was sentenced- to 12 months' hard labour. A like sentence was imposed upon James Holmes, who appeared in the dock on a similar charge. ." BY-LAW CASES. Charles Harkin was fined 5s and costs for allowing a horse to wander at large in Karangahape Road; and Alfred Percy Allen was mulcted in a similar amount for driving a horse and a vehicle, • upon the footpath of Stafford Road. i ,' .. i ' ■■ ■ MISCELLANEOUS. ■ William Henry Dye and Reuben Zukerman, who had had a slight altercation in Arney-street on August 2, were both, after much contradictory evidence had been given, dismissed. ! / Edward Myers, alias Myer, on the application of the police, was remanded to appear at .the Rotorua Court on Wednesday, on a charge of stealing a watch, watch chain, and pendant, valued at £23 10s. from J. W. Todd, at Rotorua. William Henry Grantham, charged with stealing a watch and chain, of the value of £2, from C. W. Morrison, at Auckland, was remanded till Monday. William James Courtney was remanded for eight days on a charge of obtaining two overcoats, valued at £4 Ss, the property of Macky, Logan, and Co.. by falsely representing that he had been sent by A. E. Gifford.
