PRESBYTERIAN CITY MISSION.
ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of - the , Presbyterian City Mission was held last night in St. David's Hall, Khyber 'Pass. There was a satisfactory attendance, and the retiring president (Rev. -A. : Macaulay Caldwell) presided. ) > . The secretary (Mr. .S. Falls) read the annual report, which stated:—ln consequence of the rapid : growth .of . our city, the missionary (Mr. Macpherson) finds hie work of visitation increasing, and the committee thinks that the work of visiting the homes of the people could be made of more service to those visited and to the Church if the services of a suitable deaconess could be procured, and her salary guaranteed by the Presbyterian churches of Auckland and suburbs. Mr. Macpherson visits the ships ! which arrive with immigrants, and gives what assistance he can in , regard to lodgings, work, travelling, etc. The deserving poor are helped, the sick visited, the careless and lapsed reasoned with. Most of the public institutions are visited. During the year under review the Mission benefited by the will of the late Mrs.; Knox to the extent of £500. This sum is to be invested, and the interest spent for the relief of the poor. The treasurer (Mr. M.' A. Clark) presented the balance-sheet, which showed a debit of £12 16s 4d. This, he explained, would bo converted into a credit balance when all contributions were forwarded.
The report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted. In the annual election of officers the Rev. A. Miller was made president, Mr. A. Ckrk}treasurer, and Mr. S. Falls secretary, with a strong committee of 23, representin!" all the churches of the district. .
, The Rev. A. Miller stated that the committee had entered into . correspondence ■With a person who would he suitable for the position of deaconess, whose salary had been guaranteed for a year. He thought there would be -no difficulty in.arranging the matter. - Hearty votes of thanks were passed in favour of the retiring president and the city miesioner. ■ Songs were contributed by Miss Barr and Mr. Woolley, and cupper was dispensed at the close. , ' -
