THEFT OF A HORSE.
FOUR MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWX CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Thursday. Albert Charles Weingott, the young man who was yesterday found guilty of stealing a horse at the Upper Hutt, and remanded for- sentence, came up before His Honor again to-day. Mr. Singer, of Auckland, on behalf of Weingott, who hails from that city, asked for leniency, and reminded the Court of the strong recommendation for mercy the jury had attached to its verdict. His Honor said it was not a case for probation, but there was undoubtedly a weakness in the prisoner's mind. He had had the young man examined, and thought there were indications of unsoundness of mind, yet they were not sufficient to justify him allowing the prisoner to go in impunity.
Mr. Singer mentioned that the prisoner's father was in Court, and was prepared to give assurance as to his son's future conduct. *
His Honor said he would inflict the short sentence of four months' imprisonment.
Mr. Singer said he had fried to get something out of the prisoner as to the horse, but could learn nothing definite. The other prisoners had filled the young man's mind with stories, and counsel asked that the prisoner, if possible, might be kept apart from tho others.
His Honor directed the gaoler to write to Auckland to ask that the prisoner might be kept apatt from the other prisoners during his detention in gaol.
