FRUIT HAWKERS.

Sir,—Mr. J. D. Webster, president of the Auckland Fruiterers' Association, is very anxious that the public should know that his association does not altogether want the abolition of the hawkers, but wants to induce the City Council to increase the rental for the stands to at least £1 per week. How < . delightfully frank and open Air. Webster is! I believe it is a general human failure nowadays to be selfish and try to get as much' as possible out of " the other fellow." There is therefore nothing new and extraordinary in the aims of the fruitdealers. What then* is now, however, is the publicity' given to a method of gaining their end and to make fruit dearer to the public. I for one will raise my; voice in protest against this at- Slf tempt to raise the price of fruit to a height that nobody but the wealthy can afford to' pay. The fruit-hawkers have been a great blessing in Auckland, not only by selling fruit at a reasonable price, but also by forcing the fruit '.'.shops; to bring their prices down. ■' "" '■ ,^w;:.; : ' j>,Ji;''r^:M%
