HOME FOR INCURABLES.
Sir,l understand that the trustees in the Knox estate contemplate establishing the above home in Remuera on part of the Jleadowbank Estate. As the matter is of 'importance to all residents of the district, I Should like to point out some of the dangers which will exist if this home is established in the district. lam thoroughly in sympathy jftith the aims and objects of such a home, (■which are such as appeal to the best instincts of all true New Zealanders, viz., the 'care of the old, the sick, and the suffering. . 'At the same time I feel strongly that such a bomo should not bo established in a district •which in a few years must be closely built jiipon for many reasons, a few of which I enumerate:—(l) No efficient means of drainage can bo established near the site chosen, as the topographical situation of the land lis such that it is not, and could not bo, included in' the drainage area. (2} This lack '«{ drainage would be a distinct menace to the community when the district is closely built upon. (3) The inmates of such a homo >xmld naturally use the trams and other public conveniences to the danger of the community. (4-) Such inmates must at oeriain times mix with the general community. For these reasons, and many others which I do not enumerate, I think it advisable that such a homo should be established in the country districts away from the centres of population, and I think our local authority should protest against an establishment of this nature coming into the district.
