Rain fell heavily at intervals. 5 A report from Mamaku states that cold showers and hailstones on Tuesday were followed during Ihe night by snow, which covered the ground yesterday morning. Our To Aroiia correspondent states that the weather there has been bitterly raw and cold, and yesterday morning the mountain was snow-topped.

On Monday last a. man named Donald left Pollie's Pass for■ Molesworth. His horse was subsequently found at- Clarence accommodation house, on Tuesday, but the man has not been heard of since. It is supposed that ho is lost- in the snow. There was 3ft of snow at. Follie's Pats yesterday, and the work of the search party, which lias been taken out by Constable Bird, will be extremely difficult, as the snow .js at present very loose. ? The ferry steamer Pateena, which left Wellington at eight o'clock on Tuesday evening, was 15 hours on the passage down, arriving at Lvttelton at 11 o'clock this morning. She experienced a strong southerly wind, amounting to a moderate gale, which raised a lumpy sea. The Tarawera was nearly 18 hours on the passage from Wellington- She left' that port at 6.30 p.m., and did not reach Lyttelton until 12.15 p.m. The big Federal steamer Devon, which /eft Wellington at 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday, was 25 miles off the Heads at. noon. h'v MR.
