A NARROW ESCAPE.

A new arrival in Christchurch had a narrow escape from death by burning a few nights ago. He had rented a house, but, pending the arrival of his wife, unpacked very little of the furniture... Ho 'arranged to sleep on a kapok mattress on the floor, and duly composed himself for slumber, leaving, a lighted candle by the side of his lowly couch. Ho awoke some time later to find the room filled with choking smoke, and the mattress and bedclothes on fire. In the unfamiliar quarters it- was some minutes before he could reach the window to summon assistance. He eventually succeeded *in proclaiming his plight, and by the aid of neighbours the outbreak was subdued before much damage was done.
