WOMEN'S POLITICAL LEAGUE. TffZ usual meeting of the Women's Political League was held .on Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Rule presiding. ( The views laid, before Dr. Finc!lay by a deputation of Christ-church ladies recently in connection with female prisoners were heartily endorsed and hopes expressed that tho Minister will see his way to carry some of the reforms advocated into effect. _ A resolution asking the Government to establish a , State coal depot In Auckland was carried. Reference was made to the condition of the Auckland streets, and it was agreed that the City Council might engage some of the unemployed' to sweep them; also, that the time has; arrived when . crossings should be made at all the tram stopping-places. A resolution that the Tramways Company should place different coloured lights on-, the cars for each district was also carried. 1 With regard .'to the conditions of labour in underclothing factories it was decided to make further inquiries, and, if necessary, petition the Government to-'fix t, rate of wage' for pieceworkers inside factories. ■

LECTURE on., PAN-ANGLICAN , < CONGRESS.

SUNDAY-SCHOOL , UNION. The midwinter social meeting iof . the . Auckland *' Sunday-school Union was held in the Baptist Tabernacle schoolroom last" evening, a large attendance being present. A varied programme of a addresses, ' songs, a/ad musical items contributed to the success of the evening, end Mr. ,F. Paine, of Blenheim, grave a demonstration of, sandtable and blackboard work. ■

BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council was held on Thursday evening. The Mayor (Mr. Alea. Keyea) occupied the • chair, all the members •of the Council being present. - The details of the proposed loan of £ WOO for completing - the approaches ..to the , new ferroconcrete wharf and for kerbing and channelling,the roadway, etc., as far as Clow's .
