TO PROTECT A GIRL.
YOUNG MAN COMMITS PERJURY. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
; ■ : * Wellington,. Friday. • A charge of perjury preferred against a young man named Percy James Reynolds [ was heard in the Magistrate's Court, to-day before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M. The alleged offence was that during the hearing 'of a diaTge of ' assault stated to have been committed by Reynolds on Frank Johnson accused swore, " I was married to Florrie Wyllie, about. Christ-mas,- 1908-> I can't say who married us. I shall say lam legally married to Florence Wyllie." Evidence as to accused's statements in the witness-box were given by the police. A written statement was produced by SubInspector Norwood, in which accused said that he had falsely sworn in order to protect the girl. Evidence was also given by Mr.' G. G. Hodkins (registrar of births, marriages ' and deaths) that no such marriage as stated had been registered. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was allowed.
