LOADING RAILWAY TRUCKS.
LABOUR SAVING DEVICE. [BY TELEGRAPH.—rRESS ASSOCIATION.] ** . 0 amaru, Friday. Negotiations with the Government for the purchase from him of an appliance for the Railway Department to facilitate the loading of bags of grain, potatoes, coal, lime, etc., into railway trucks, have been completed by Mr. John MacPherson, of Oamaru. The appliance hooks on to the side of a truck, and . can be attached or detached in a moment. Used in connection with an ordinary bag lifter, it will be found invaluable at railway stations, especially when tracks are scarce during the height of the grain season, or when there is a rush at stations to get produce away to a'steamer. Mr. A. Grant ' (late traffic superintendent), and Mr. H. MacAndretv (district railway engineer), by ' direction of the Minister for Railways, watched an exhibition of the machine working, and - were much impressed with the ease by which the bags were quickly loaded into trucks from the ground. They . reported favourably on the invention. It is understood that it is the intention of the Railway . Department to have a number made, and placed at different stations where much produce is trucked. . ■
