CABLE CHARGES.
CHEAPENING THE RATE!^
REDUCTIONS BY STAG EM By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright.
London, August 5. Sir Joseph Ward, in the course of the interview with the Daily Chronicle yesterday, said he favoured the reduction of the cable charges by stages, as giving confidence to administrators to gradually lower the charges. Personally, he considered reduction one of the most pressing questions of the day. He disliked anything that might be unfair , to the owners of the cable services, but it was most regrettable that the people of the great and growing overseas dominions should be kept in a position of isolation through inability to use the cables, which were so .much unoccupied.
Sir Joseph strongly favoured State-owned cables between the Motherland and her dominions, and was hopeful that the existing conditions would not last much longer. He also entirely favoured an All-Red or All-British steam service. He recognised , that many difficulties existed,. adding, " But the more you reduce distances and give the people of the Motherland and her new countries the opportunity of meeting, the greater becomes the tendency to do business mutually."
