A STREET FIGHT.

At the Police Court- yesterday, before Mr. E. C. Cutlen, S.M., a young man named Wm. Shepherd was charged with having assaulted Jas Halley, in Welles-ley-street East, on the previous night. It appeared from the evidence that Halley and two companions were proceeding up the street, and were followed and attacked by three men. Halley was knocked down, and, it was alleged, kicked on the eye and face. Halley and one of his companions, whom the police called, both admitted, however, that they were somewhat under the influence of liquor at the time of the assault, and could, not identify accused. The case was dismissed without prejudice. ALLEGED STABBING. Patrick Denis Smythe was charged with having assaulted Adam Meek,on the night of the 6th inst., by stabbing him with a knife. Chief-Detective Marsack stated that the injured man had been stabbed three times in the face, and once on the breast. • ■

In a statement, made by him, accused, who is suffering from a bad injury to his eye, alleges that ho was having supper with a friend in a restaurant when they were set upon. Both were roughly handled, and accused was thrown on to the road. His friend escaped and their assailants returned to attack him. He had meantime risen in a dazed condition, and pulled out a knife to cut tobacco, and used the hand which held the knife unconsciously to ward off the blows. Accused was remanded, and bail was fixed in his own recognisances of £100, and two sureties of £50 each.

ESCAPING FROM CUSTODY. Peter Green was charged with having used threatening behaviour in Federalstreet, and with having resisted Constable Matthew. The facts of the case, as stated by Sub-Inspector Hendrey, were that the constable was arresting two men, and Green took advantage of this to escape, and was subsequently arrested on warrant. He was fined £1, in default three days' imprisonment. PETTY THEFTS. Frank Evans, alias Swanson, was charged with having stolen a clock, value 6s 6d, from the dwelling of Ellen Grace, and with stealing a pair of boots, value 14s, "which were placed beside him on the bar of a hotel. He was convicted on both charges, and sentenced to two months' and a fortnight's imprisonment, sentences to be concurrent. PROHIBITION ORDER CASES. Geo. MeCauley was charged with having accompanied Thos. Fitzroy into licensed premises, knowing him to be prohibited. He pleaded ignorance that Fitzroy was prohibited, and got the benefit of the doubt. s Thos. Fitzroy was fined £1, in default seven days' imprisonment, for having been found on licensed premises, and having procured liquor while prohibited. . Thos. Aitken appeared on three charges of being found on licensed premises, and \ two of procuring liquor while prohibited. He was fined £2, in default 14 days' imprisonment. Frank Murphy, charged with drunkenness and two breaches of his prohibition order by entering licensed premises and procuring liquor, was ordered to pay £3, or go to gaol for 14 days.

: ; OFFENSIVE SPEECH. / George Dalton, alias Stephens, was charged: with using insulting language in Queen-street. The evidence showed 'that he was admonished by a constable for constantly loitering in , a Jane, and made some comments; on , the , officer liberally spalshed with the great Australian: adjective. He was fined 10s.

John Jas. Campbell was arrested in Cook-street, while giving utterance to a flow of obscene language. For this and for procuring liquor while prohibited i.e was fined £2, in default seven days' imprisonment. . A CHARGE WITHDRAWN. Mr. Prendergast, who appeared for Hermann B. Fisher in a private prosecution against Sydney L. Jones for the alleged theft of jewellery, valued at £50, asked leave to, withdraw the case. The prosecutor had found that there was not evidence , to. support a crimin.il prosecution. It was not a case in which a consideration had passed, as no arrangement had been made between the parties. Mr, Neve, who appeared for Jones, said he had contended all along that if there were grounds for action it was a civil action. Leave to withdraw, was granted. REMANDS. Henry Norman was charged with having indecently assaulted a girl. Accused, who is described as a stage manager, was remanded till Wednesday. • Joseph Homiston and Katherine Homiston, charged with .abandoning their three-weeks-old, child at the Newmarket, railway station, were further remanded, pending the male accused's discharge from the hospital. . ,[..-. Jas. Allison Mcintosh, charged with stealing a cheque for £4, drawn on the ■Bank of New Zealand, the property of M. A. Johnston, was remanded to appear in eight days at us, where the offence is alleged to have been committed. MISCELLANEOUS. . \ For driving without lights, Reginald McDonald was fined ss. Ernest Carter was fined 5s for leaving a vehicle without chaining the wheel. Mary Amelia South, Harry Dunbar, and three first offenders were fined 5s for; drunkenness, and another had her bail j estreated.

An order was made that Robert Vernon Thomas should pay 7s 6d a week towards the maintenance of his illegitimate child, and defray costs of birth.
