MINING NEWS.

1 — % .;;.-■■; J THE WAiOTAH! MINE. LEADER TURNED TO THE LEFT. BREAKING-DOWN POSTPONED. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ■■■■:■■.. . Thames, Friday. In the i Waiotahi mine at No. 4 level the work of. extending the drive eastward on the fhangingwall leader has been in progress during the day, but the fact of the leader ' having taken a decided turn to the left has somewhat delayed the work, it - having" been found necessary to come back and, shoot down the left * side of : the ■ drive to ,make room. In consequence of this there will not be a sufficient'length of the leader stripped to lhave a. breaking-down to-mor-row as was intended. Breaking-down will probably not take place until Monday : morning, and even then there will not be more than a small bench stripped off for sft in length, so ; that no great haul of, picked stone can be expected, more especially as the run of gold appears to be mostly above the drive, and does not come down ' more "" than about a foot or 28in * from the back. It is intended to continue the drive for a further 20ft, and then rise up and carry along a leading stope. . As' far as can be seen better, results should be ob- ' tained from the leading stope than can be looked for from the drive. A better esti- - , mat© can then be formed as to the extent of the run. . ; . , The turn to-the-left which has now occurred to the leader means a considerable V difference as regards -the : '. prospects of f.his company, as, should it continue on the new ~ course, it would strike clear of the corner of the May Queen .boundary and continue on in the Waiotahi ground for a . further 160 ft, running parallel ■ ■ with"' the * north-eastern boundary. ]■%', In the upper. workings of this section of the mine a cross slido was met with some little distance; ahead of the- present workings composed of a puggy quartz formation, and this ; ; will probably be met with sat a distance of about 20ft. from the present face. It is reasonable to suppose -that it is the proxim- • ity of this slide that has made the run of< gold in the r leader. This slide will;' no doubt, have the effect of displacing >tha , leader when it is r reached; : and although there is no certainty as to which direction, ■ it will heave the lode,, the. general:.surroundings point ■". to • the supposition"that it will throw it still further to the left. WAITANGI CONSOLIDATED. A GOOD RETURN. The result of the treatment of 194 tons of ■ mineralised ore and a little over scwt of slimes shipped by the Waitangi Consolidated Gold Mining Company to the Sulphide Corporation, Limited, New South Wyles, is as follows: The slimes yielded £63 dssd net, which works out at < £234- 8s lid per ton, while the mineralised ore has given a net return of £296 12s 4d, or £15 10s 3d per ton; ' The total return is, therefore, £360 Is 9d. This is the net amount after paying all expenses incurred in the treatment of the ore. THE GIGANTIC GROUP. ENGLISH SYNDICATE FORMED. [BY TELEGRAPH— CORRESPONDENT.] Waihi, Friday. Advices have been received by the holders, of Walker's Gigantic group of. claims x from London to the effect that a strqng;,syndicata has been i formed at Home, with a; substantial working capital, to develop; the -properties. The group, which comprises some 400 acres of ground, „ lies to the north-east of the Waihi Consolidated, and is bounded on this: side by the Consolidated and the Romulus. The latter area is also now in the hands of an English syndicate. The Home syndicate will probably start operations on the Gigantic ground shortly with the sinking of a shaft on "the western slope of the rising • country east of the Waihi Consolidated. ' The property occupies a good position as far as the reef system is concerned, provided the lodes live out and carry values, ' TALISMAN". '-■ v The Talisman mine. authorities have sent to London the following cable:—No. 12 level south : Progress, 26ft; values low.'No. 13 level north: Drive on branch"vein 435 ft; south progress, 9ft; width" <•} reef, 27in; values low. " . WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION. The superintendent of the Waihi Grand Junction r;inc has cabled to the' London i office as follows:—" No. 6 lode C west south drive For the last 18ft,; average width of reef is 10ft, average value £7; underlie, 62 degrees north-west." __ WAIHI BEACH. A telegram has been received from the manager of the Waihi Beach mine, stating that the tank has been recovered,-and also ■ that the pump is again working. ' OTAGO DREDGING RETURNS. [8Y,,. TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.'} DuNEDir, Friday.

The following dredging returns are re:—Mystery Flat, 90oz 6dwt; Koputai, 30oz Bdwt; j Mnsterton, ; 270z 3dwt; i Electrio No. 1. 240z 3dwt; .Waikaia, 21oz -lOdwt; Central Charlton, , 16oz 13dwt; • South Waikaia, 14oz - 19dwt; New Roxburgh Jubilee, 14oz lldwt; Chicago. 6oz 6dvvfc. , NOTES. The manager of the Phcp.nix and Dreadnought mines reports that he is drilling info a sort of quartz. He does not think ■■. it ;is / the reef proper, but a loose portion.' The country is full of water. Twelve feet were driven during the week. .. ; The manager of the Kapowai mine reports * that the low levej, has been extended a fur-" v ther distance ,of lOfl. On Saturday last, a - clay seam about lin thick was? intersected ati ' right angles. The country on the other side ■ appears to be a little firmer, and is dipping at a -higher angle than that previously passed through. There is a good deal of mineral in it, and water is still coming from the lace. In the Mclsaacs section the block is all taken out. There are about 10 tens of payable" dirt in the hopper. s

The manager of the Four-in-Hand mini© reports that driving in the- low level is being _ continued. The only change in the' country is the appepranee of calcite veins and 'ouartz stringers. The winze on the : Four-in-Hand ! reef in No. 4- level has been put in order,' and a start made to crosscut for the foot wall reef. Prospecting on the Cuirassier reef a few pounds of picked stone were i obtained, with strong dabs of gold continuing in the stone. The Cuirassier reef is supposed to be a; branch of the Four-in-Hand reef in the southernmost portion of the workings.

The manager of the Mountain King mine reports that driving north has been advanced a further distance of 7ft. The country is of a goad class for carrying gold-bearing reefs. The reef has been taken down ,to within 4ft, of, the present face, and is a nice compact body of ore, measuring about 2ft 6in in width, and still continues to show good colours of gold and seams of sulphide ore running through the centre of the hard quartz. -The or© coming, from this section of the mine is improving. The rise has been ascended a further distance of 9ft. The country is still a nice mild class of andesite. and there _"aro numerous mineral seams and flinties striking into the reef. The reef has not yet been taken down. There are- between 35ft and 40ft of reef stripped, ready for taking down when the connection is com- ". pleted. They have risen over 10ft further . than the surveyed distance, owing to thereef taking a bigger dip, but there can only remain a few feet between the bottom of the „ winze and the rise, as they can talk to each other. ..'.-■.-
