"A SPITEFUL ATTACK."
INDIGNANT -WHARF-LABOURERS.

. ' Chkistchukch, Friday. A r.AUGEi.Y-ATTKNDKn meeting of the waterside workers of Lyttelton was held this morning, to protest against the statements by ex-Detective Connell, in giving evidence before the Police Commission at Invercargill, reflecting upon the working of Lyttelton. There was a considerable amount of discussion, several of the speakers expressing themselves in the strongest terms of disapproval.
On the motion of H. R. Voyce, seconded by J. H. -Ems-ley,- the following resolution was carried unanimously.—"That * this largs and" representative meeting of the Lyttelton waterside workers desires to express its deep indignation at the unfounded statements regarding the honesty of the working men of Lyttelton', made by exDetective Council before the Police Commission at Invercargill. It also desires to convey to Mr. G. Laurencon, M.P., its sympathy with him in being.the subject.of a slanderous and spiteful attack; and, further, it requires the- officers of the union to see that evidence is put before the Police Commission when it sits in Christchiirch in refutation of the attack made upon the workers of this port."
A further resolution was carried instructing the executive of the union to take the necessary steps to enable witnesses, to appear ' before the Police Commission in Christchurch, and :it was also, decided to communicate with Mr. Bishop, the Com-
missioner, asking him to have ex-Detective Connell brought here, so that he may. be cross-examined on the evidence given; by him at Invercargill. %
