FRUIT-SPRAYING.
Sir,ln a recent issue of the Herald there' appeared the report of a number of orchardists being fined £1 and ' costs for i; neglecting to spray. v with :: araenato 'of - lead, -while in r the same issue ' was' recorded the sad death of a child from -y ; eating fruit which had been sprayed with 'V: that poison. So that on the one hand the- 1 •,* penalty for not " spraying .is a fine, and -on v* ? the other it is death. Truly ail unenviable,2 position. The trouble, would appear to arise f. ' from the spraying being; done when: the S' -y fruit is mature, instead'of in the early stages, : and, while the Government should insist on early spraying, fines should not be imposed i- / 1 for neglect when compliance means a serious risk: to life.
