. WAIHI. -. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] "" Waihi, Wednesday. A match between teams of 10 men a-siie from the No. 3 Ohinemuri Rifles and the Waihi Gun Club will be fired on the local range on Saturday afternoon. The examinations for mine managers' and .battery superintendents' certificates under the Mining Act, 1908, are proceeding at the; Waihi Scnool of Mines. Mr. M. Paul, Government inspector of mines, is acting as, supervisor of the written portion, and Messrs. Thos. Gilmour (Waihi), and H. P. Hornibrooke (Coromandel) will conduct the oral examination on practical points. A well-attended meeting of the Waihi Athletic Club was held last evening in the Sterling Hotel, Mr. H. Svvann presiding." Routine business was transacted, and- the secretary's report showed that everything pointed to a successful sports meeting on Saturday, April 10. At the residence of Mr. A. Parry yesterday, Mr. J. Orchard, of Waihi, and Miss Ethel Rough, of Tasmania, were married, Adjutant Gray, of the Salvation Army, conducting the ceremony. The bride was given away by Mr. Speak, and was attended by Miss Speak as "bridesmaid, and the bridegroom was supported by Mr. W. Bice as best man. The quarterly meeting of the Waihi branch of the Hibernian Society was held last evening, and was well attended. A scheme for increasing the membership was. submitted and enthusiastically received, and . alter ordinary business had been transacted the Very Rev. At Ihe meeting of the Star of Paeroa Lodge of Druids on Monday night, Bli- ' ther Beattie was installed an district president of the No. 10 district, which , reaches from Thames to Waihi. The installation was conducted by Brother H. J, Field. After the ceremony Brother Beattie, on behalf of the lodges in the district, presented Brother Field with a .past district president's collar and dif'onia. A regatta and a sports meeting will be held during tho Easter holidays, thus providing attractions for visitors who have seen all the sights. Only one, tender was received for the supply of; gravel and sand, to be used in connection with the new town hall building. The price was 2s 5d per yard for sand, and 3s 4d for gravel. Messrs. A. Wilkinson and Co., plumbers and gasfitters,. applied for, a building permit, which was granted on the usual terms. •■ ■ i y ~' The tender of Messrs. Chappell .and Woolley, of Auckland, has been accepted for the town hall. ■' / '• A social gathering of members of the local branch of the Y.M.C.A. was held on Monday evening, the • president (Mr. G. C. Ellis) occupying tho chair. At a prior meeting of the board of managers, it was decided to purchase the gymnasium building from the Methodist trustees ; in terms . of their offer. The matter of a refreshment stall being established at Ruakura was discussed, and it was decided that a deputation should wait upon the Minister for Railways or other Minister of the Crown in reference to the question. It was resolved that' the attention of the district traffic manager be drawn to the fact that the Cambridge railway service has been most irregular for the past month. It was decided to request the Minister for Post and Telegraphs that an independent telephone line be established : between Auckland and Cambridge. HAMILTON. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., presided at the ■ Police Court yesterday morning. Robert Lock, who is under bail, on the" charge of having unlawfully wounded his wife, appeared. The polica applied for a further remand of eight days, on the ground that Mrs. Lock was not sufficiently recovered to give evidence. Mr. Gillies, who appeared for the accused, opposed the remand. He said Mrs. Lock had been injured six weeks ago, and he understood that in any case she would not be a witness against her husband. It had been stated in Court by Sergeant Hastio that Mrs.' Lock was a compellable witness. If the police were prepared to say , that she was a willing witness, and would go into the witness-box on her own ac- ; count, he could not .object, but he con- : sidered that Mrs. Lock was not prepared to go into the box. The magistrate said he knew nothing of the case except that Mrs. Lock is ill. A remand for seven days Was granted. ' ,--' HENDERSON. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] A concert was held in the Town Hall, Henderson, on Tuesday evening, a large and appreciative audience being present. The programme was an interesting one, a feature being the singing of Master R. Casley, a boy soprano, who rendered "Love Me and the World is Mine" and " Lilacs," besides appearing in a number of trios, duets, etc. " Come Back to Erin" was sung by Mrs. Wells, Mr. T. Stackpole sang "Good-bye and God Bless You, Kathleen," and "The Yeoman's Wedding Song." Other items on the programme were: Overture, "The Wreath,", Miss Maud Wells; chorus, ';" Ye .Shepherds Tell Mo;" duet, "Maying," Mies and Master Casley; "Awful Little Scrub," Mr. J. ■■' Wells; "Mary," Mr. J.
