FIRE ON A STEAMER.

'"-•* i A TIMELY DISCOVERY. .Ui central fire motor made a Lurried pas£?e through Queen-street at 8.00 on £ urdn v evening, in the directum of the Kern Shipping Company's Wharf, S£ flames were issuing fro.n the steamer Waimarie. A couple of hose-reels also ar%d, and in less than half an hour tho fire had been extinguished. The origin of the outbreak M unknown, tat it is believed to have started in the Slev, and spread thence to tho pantry, Eatery, and main saloon. Most of the hands had been given the day off, and at the time the only persons aboard were a .We of stewards. The result was that the fire was not noticed till a quantity 0 cushions curtains, bedding, etc., had teen demolished, and when the work of the brigade had ceased, the saloon presented a decidedly charred appearance. It "ill no* be known until to-day whether it will be necessary to detain the Waimario for repairs, but if so she. will only be delayed for one trip, the Chelmsford iakiug up her running in the meantime. ____________
