[nr TELEGRAPH—OWN" CORRESPONDENT.] : - ~ Christchurch, , Saturday. ■ The Christchurch Fire Board t has submitted to the' members,'of the brigade a set of conditions under which it is proposed the 'men. should work. The ] items on the list include several points on-which a difference of opinion exists,; and : when the hoard's secretary submitted the conditions to the men they declined to sign them. There are four items to which the men are strongly opposed. "In the one dealing with wages the board proposes to establish the present rate, which is about £1 ,18s 6d a .week with quarters. - The men have already- announced that they consider that this is too low, and they still, take up that position. ■;'.-, Then the board proposes that donations, shouldr be taken by it. The men say that the donations have been placed in f the ',' brigade funds, - from which amusements v and other expenses • are provided. v The th item to -which objection is ,:taken enables ; the board to dismiss members without a reason, which; is considered unfair. ■ The fourth item to which the men object provides that they shall attend guaranteed fires outside the city boundary, and f do work not connected with fire's without extra pay. '-,' Applications'for the position of superintendent of the Christchurch Fire Brigade closed yesterday, with 18 applications, including number from Victoria 1 and New South Wales. ■ The iFire Board will deal with them at a special meeting. A preliminary meeting'of citizens was held yesterday as the outcome of informal conversation among the many friends of' Superintendent Smith, to consider a proposal to; make recognition of his services to the citizens for the past 31 years in the fire brigade of Christchurch. It was finally resolved, .after, discussion, that a meeting should be held in the Chamber of Commerce on Monday evening ,to further discuss the matter. • ■ " . ' -'
