POLICE COURT NEWS.

COMMITTED FOR SENTENCE.

In tho Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. B. Kent, C. B. King, and J. Jcnkin, J.P.'a, a young man, John Matthews, was charged with having stolen from the dwelling of Jeannie Wolff, at Auckland, clothes and jewellery to the value of £26 lis 6d, the property of Alfred Leonard.

Evidence was called to show that; tho accused, who had formerly been employed as a general hand in a travelling "buck-jumping" show, left his employer (Leonard) at Dargaville, and returned to Auckland, where he wont to the residence of Mrs. Wolff, -at which place his employer had left some boxes containing clothing and jowellery. By representing that the complainant had given him permission to do so, he opened tho boxes, and disappeared with the contents. Subsequently a large number, of the articles wore recovered at various pawnshops, where Matthews had disposed of them. Whon askod to plead, tho accused replied " Guilty," and ho was thereupon committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.

ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER.

The man named Robert Garr, alias Craydon, alias Kelly, who had been remanded from Dargaville to Auckland on a charge of having attempted to murder Captain James Mewotfc at langowahine, on November 28, was further remanded to re-appear at Dargavillo on the 15th inst. Station-Sergeant Hendry stated that Mewett was not yet in a condition to appear.

" UNWISELY PLACED." Alfred Bridgman was charged with having committed a breach of the Mohnt Eden Borough Council s by-laws by burning litter on an open space, to the danger of a build- '"(?• It was stated by tho prosecution that the defendant had burnt, some rubbish on November 9 near a building, which was destroyed by fire the. following morning. Bridgman said that he had watched the fire continuously, and when ho loft in tho evening ho thought that everything was safe. Ife considered that he had been quite prudent. Tho Bench hold that the fire was most unwisely placed, and fined tho defendant £5, and costs £2 7s.

MISCELLANEOUS.

Alexander Neill, a young man, who had behaved in a disorderly manner while drunk in Victoria-street on Saturday evening, was fined £2, and costs 17s, or, m default, one month's imprisonment; while on a further charge of using bad language ho was convicted and discharged. Margaret Jane Marnil, a young woman, pleaded guilty to having stolen £1 from tho boardinghouse at which she was engagod as a general servant. Chief-Detective Marsack said that he thought the case was one of sudden temptation, and he considered that the probation officer's report might bo obtained. The accused was accordingly ' remanded until Thursday, to permit of this being done. George Cain was remanded until Friday on a charge of having stolen a quantity ot rags, bones, and bottles, valued at 15s, tho property of Henry Varcoe. Alex. McLean, charged with having stolen jewellery to tho value of £7, the property of Annie Ucerey, was also remanded until Friday. For drunkenness, Martin Saunders, a coloured man. whoso record tho Bench described as an "exceptionally bad" one, was fined £3, or, in default, seven days' imprisonment. William Carroll was fined £1, or 48 hours, for a similar offence, while one first offender forfeited £1 bail, and another was ordered to pay 17s 6d costs, which had boon incurred through his requiring medical treatment.

Before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., Edward Bosworth was fined £2 and costs, or in default seven days' imprisonment, on a charge of entering Glceson's Hotel during the currency of a prohibition order against him.
