Five persons charged with drunkenness, one with theft, and one suspected of lunacy, occupied the police cells last night.

The Wellington city tramways during the four-weekly period ending November 10 earned £10,510. This is van . increase of. £1213 as compared with- the similar period last year. -/The passengers carried numbered 1,651,734, an increase of 142,057.
. During the week the old mine on the west, bank of the river (writes our Himtly correspondent) lias been very active, flames and smoke being emitted from the disused shafts and workings. The flames illuminated the neighbouring country the other night.
