Colonel Ropers arrived from the South by the West Coast boat on Saturday.

Mr. W. H. Hemes, M.T., arrived in Auckland from Te Aroha by the express on Saturday.

Mr. ('has. Hanson, manager of the Northern Steamship Company, left by the Rarawa yesterday for' Wellington.

Mr. J. Kirker, manager of the. South British Insurance Company, left on a visit to Wellington yesterday by the Rarawa.

Mr. East, of the Northern S.S. Co., was a passenger by the Rarawa yesterday, en route to Christchurch, on a holiday tour.

Mr. George S. Pearson, of Hamilton East, died on Saturday, after a lingering illness, aged 49. He "was the eldest son of one of the pioneers of Hamilton, and leaves a widow and grown-up family.

Captain England, presumably the officer lately in charge of the Nimrod on her expedition to the Antarctic regions, is, with Mrs. England, a passenger by the Morayshire, due to arrive in Wellington at an early date.

The Hon. Jas. Carroll (Minister for Native Affairs) left Gisborne by yesterday's steamer for Wellington, where there is important Cabinet business awaiting consideration. Mr: Carroll (telegraphs our correspondent) intends returning home for the Christmas vacation.

Lady . Jane Ethel Gathorne-Hardy, second daughter of the Earl of Cranbrook, has arrived at Wellington from England, via Australia, on a visit to her brother, Captain the Hon. Mr. M. Hickey, who has been in charge of the Main Trunk railway works at Taumarunu: and vicinity for about seven years, has been transferred to the North Auckland section. , Prior to leaving Taumarunui Mr. Hickey was presented with an illuminated address by residents of the district, and a presentation was also made to him and to Mrs. Hickey by \ his associates at Manunui.

Mr. G. Lloyd, of the firm of Messrs. P.. 0. /Clark, Limited, was presented by his fellow employees on Saturday with a travelling bag, suitably inscribed, on the occasion of his promotion to the charge of the' company's j branch ■ depot at Wellington. The presentation was made, by the foreman, Mr. R. Smith, who referred to the esteem in which Mr. Lloyd was held, and assured him that he would carry with him the best wishes of his friends for his future welfare. -

Dr. H. Hard wick Smith, who has been appointed to succeed Dr. Ewart as medical superintendent of the Wellington Hospital (telegraphs our Christchurch correspondent), is a young Englishman, who has been in practice in Christchurch for a few : months. He holds extremely high English credentials. After taking his degrees in arts, medicine, and surgery at Cambridge University, he entered St. Bartholomew's : Hospital, London, filling posts both on the medical and surgical tides of the hospital and in the various special departments. When he left there last ; December he \ was senior member of the resident staff. In November of last year he became a fellow of the Royal College ot Surgeons, England. Dr. Smith will be married in a few weeks to the daughter of Mr. W. H. Triggs, editor of the Christchurch Press. ,
