A MIDNIGHT CHASE.

Jevonport house entered.

An exciting episode occurred at a boardinjrhottse at. the corner of Ann and Clarence Streets, Devonport, on Saturday night, one of the boarders having a midnight chase after & burglar. The owner of the house, Mrs. Thompson closed and locked the front door before going to bed, at about 11.50 p.m. About an hour later the had occasion to go out into the passage to obtain some matches. To her surprise she found the front door wide open. Alarmed by this circumstance, Mrs. Thompson cried out, whereupon a male boarder got up to see -what wae the matter. On learning what 'had occurred, he went out on to the baloonv. to which his bedroom window opened, and looking ever the rail, saw a man rush out from below and disappear. ; The boarder immediately gave chase, and yeas joined by a constable, who had been ", attracted by Mrs. Thompson's outcry. The thief, however, eluded hi« pursuers. '*' A search of the house revealed the fact that all that was missing was a suit of clothes belonging to the boarder who had tried to capture the intruder. Mrs. Thompon and the other boarders lost nothing, and yesterday morning the missing suit •was found in the garden, where the thief bad dropped it in his haste to escape.
