NEWS IN BRIEF.
The Gisborne Borough Council has adopted a £40,000 loan proposal for roads for submission to the ratepayers. At the present time the Marlborough Timber Company's mill in the Opouri is preparing an order for 260,000 ft of white pine for Sydney. The Gisborne Borough Council is taking steps to remove the names of troopers inscribed on the Cook monument, against which there has been considerable outcry. Two persons arrested on charges of drunkenness, ■ two for committing breach of the peace, and one for using obscene language, were the occupants of the police cells last night. A young man named Reid lost control of his bicycle when going down a hiU to Taupo Quay, Wanganui, on Sunday, and crashed through one of the windows of a fish shop. He was badly cut and braised by the broken glass, the sinews of one wrist being completely severed. The mischief that might be caused by a nail lying on the street was exemplified by the loss of a valuable mare, owned by a. Nelson carter, last week. The animal got the nail into the frog of a hoof about a month ago. Blood-poisoning tot in, with the result that death ensued. The mare was valued at £50, and an offer of £45 was refused for it some time ago.
