AN UNPROFITABLE SERVICE. By Telegraph.— Association,—Copyright. Melbourne, October 7. Mr. Hesketh, chief electrician of the Telegraph , Department, giving evidence before the Federal Post Office Commission, said the telegraph service should be made to pay. It was unsound policy to charge ninepence for a telegram which cost tenpence to send. He did not know that the New Zealand Department of Post and Telegraphs showed a profit of £100,000 lust year on a basis of penny postage and sixpenny telegrams. Perhaps that result had been achieved •without providing for payment of interest on capital. Continuing his evidence, Mr. Hesketh said that he was not prepared to say the Eastern Extension cable rates were too high, since the Pacific cable, which charged the same, did not pay. He understood that the Eastern Extension had special arrangements as to prees messages between Australia and London. ~ He was hot prepared to say it was bad policy on the part of the Government to allow the, Eastern Company to have a monopoly of the press cable business. , /
