.''•';' :■'.—. <+ ' ' — .■/ . WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION. NEW REEF IN SHAFT. A notice 'was posted on tho Stock Exchange on 'Saturday, morning intimating that quartz had been struck in the main shaft of tho Waihi Grand Junction mine at a depth of 944 ft. Tho assay value was 8s 6d per ton. . , -' [BY TELEGRAPH.-— CORRESPONDENT.} Waihi, Saturday. j At the bottom oF the Grand Junction Company's shaft, which is now down the required depth for, the opening up of a new level (No. 5), a fresh make of oro has been intersected crossing ono corner of the shaft. The quartz body been cut on tho hang-: ingwall side, and appears to be a cross-lode,, but so far not sufficient, work has been done oil it to determine the importance of tho discovery to the company, only a couple'of; rounds of holes having been fired out. The* ' drills have bored into quartz for about sft, and as far as can bo' ascertained there is no* sign of the footwall portion of the reef.Meanwhile, ] however, it is ' encouraging to ■ ;' ; know that tho quartz is gold-bearing, as the. ] .i; first assays from the hangingwall havo given, ' values averaging about 10s per ton. It in characteristic of the reefs in the district that' the low grade material is found on the hang-; ingwall, and the higher grade oro on tho footwall section, and it may be assumed that the same will apply in this case, as the/ latest samples obtained from the reef going / towards tho footwall show, a greatly improved appearance. One or two pieces brought up by the manager (Mr. Daley) about noon to-day would undoubtedly give pay values. A few days should give a better idea of the quality of tho ore body in hand, but its exploitation has to bo approached carefully owing to the possibility of a strong flow of water being tapped. The cutting out of the chamber for No. 5 level is now in progress, and should bo" completed in from ,six weeks to two months, aflor which a start will .bo' made to advance tho crosscuts to intersect the various oro bodies at a depth almost; equivalent to tho 1000 ft vel in the Waihi mine. • < SOUTHERN QUEEN. The secretary of the Southern Queen mine) \:i (Mr. H. J. Leo) received 1 a telegram from the manager on Saturday, ihtimating that he had crushed 28 loads for a return of 71oa lOdwt of gold, valued at, say, £195. The 'utopes on the footwall leader above No. 6 l-!,vel are still pro- ' ducing a regular supply of'payables ore. . } ' , THAMES. • ' ■ [BY ".TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT,'''!'-, , , '-."■,■"'. :'• ■ -,■■'■ :■'''.■ Thames,' Saturday. Operations in the Thames mine aro. confined to prospecting the upper portions oB the Nonpareil section in the Waiotahi Creek, immediately below the old company's workings. The old winzes sunk by the tributors from the Nonpareil le'vol have been cleaned out and the loaders driven on", but 'as yet with disappointing, results, nothing* of any importance having been met with, i ALBURNIA.' ( [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] ' ' : Thames, Saturday. Good progress is being made'with 'the main rise (in the,Alburnia mine. It is still, - being carried up in the'footwall country of; reef. The crosscut through the reef at thevlow. '' . level in the ' New Sylvia miiib: has been con- ~ tinued during the .week. The flow of Water' > ■■ from the reef ha 3 now eased off . somewhat* i < So far as can be seen at present the reef is j- , about 4ft to sft thick/ from the footwall to a the face of the crosscut,-composed of # ribs of 1 rubbly quartz ■ containing : a quantity of . mineral, and colours of gold are to bo ; seen in Bom 6 portions. It is now intended toj discontinue the crosscut for the present and commence driving south along the footwall of the ■ reef, and the- necessary timbers are - being placed in position to allow of this being done with safely.
