POLICE COURT NEWS.
THEFT OF A HAMPER. . & respectably-dressed man named William Hunter was charged at the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. Shepherd ,jid Russell, justices, of' the peace, with stealing a wicker hamper, valued at 7s 6d, jjje property of David Palmer. Mr. J. R. Lundon defended. The case for the . prosecution was put forward by Sergeant Hendry. It was that on the previous day the accused was seen to select one from a num* ber of wicker hampers standing outside • jfr. Palmer's shop, in the Strand Arcade, and walk off with it. He was followed, and given in charge. In reply to Mr.. Lundon, the witnesses i ' for the prosecution stated .'that it was quite evident that the accused was muddled with drink. The Bench considered that a fine would meet the case., and imposed a penalty of
-. . COMMITTED FOR. TRIAL.. Geo. Arthur Wilson, for whom Mr. Skelton appeared, was charged on two counts of indecent assault, one on the 15th and the other on the 20th of July last. The first offence was alleged to have been committed in Scotia Place, and the second at the Wynyard Pier. After the evidence for the prosecution had been concluded, the accused pleaded not guilty, and, reserving his defence, was committed for trial. Bail wss allowed. MISCELLANEOUS. A first offender for drunkenness was remanded for a week for medical treatment. John Green, a. second offender, was fined lOs,; and costs. Richard McDonald and William Crowe, for leaving vehicles unattended with the wheels unchained, were fined 5s each, and costs. .. Frank Wilson, alias Watson, alias Kemp, alias Murray, was charged with assaulting a man named James Preston by striking him with a brick, thereby causing him actual bodily harm, and at his own request was remanded until' Monday next.
