BRITAIN'S UNEMPLOYED. A DESPERATE CROWD. POLICE USE THEIR BATONS. Br Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright. London, September 25. Colonel Seely (Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies), speaking at Chesterfield, admitted that the unemployed now numbered nearly 9 per cent of the total working population, as against 4 per cent, for the same period of 1907. (Received September 27, 4.15 p.m.) London, September 26. General trade depression prevails, and serious demonstrations by the unemployed are taking place. The Manchester police, by means of their batons, dispersed a crowd of 2000 unemployed who threatened to raid the Town Hall. Mr. John Burns, President of the Local Government Board, has authorised the Manchester Corporation to borrow £50,000 for relief works.
