BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A MERTiNO of the Board pf Education wan lielu yesterday morning, there being present : Messrs. C. J. Parr (chairman), G. J. Garland, L. J. Bagnall, G. Edgecumbe, E. 0. Purdie, J. D. Mackenzie, 0. T. Barriball, and A. R. Harris.

The Chairman's Report: The chairman reported that the Minister for Education had declined to recognise a. claim for a subsidy on the contributions towards the cost of the swimming bath at the school at Mount Eden. Section 26, Rawene township, had been set apart by the School Commissioners for school purposes. The Minister had again been asked to authorise the removal of the teacher's residence from the native school site to Waimana.

Resignations: Tho following resignations were received and accepted: Mr. A. H. W. Thomson, headmaster, Rawene school; Mr. James T. Gough 4 teacher, Katui and Aranga schools; Misa Jessie Earl, assistant, Parnell; and Miss B. E. B. Burroll, pupil teacher, Hamilton West District High School. finance: Tho Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £1148 on the administration account, £705 19a on the building account, and £742 on the manual and technical account. The committee • recommended that application should bo made to the Minister for a sufficient grant for tiles for the bathroom at, the training College. The report was adopted. Teachers* Selection Committee: The ■teachers Selection Committee recommended the Board to authorise the following ap-pointments:-Miss Ethel M. Potter, teacher, Hotoo North; Miss May A. Ross, teachor, lererenga; Mr.William R.Wheatley, teacher, Ruapuke; Mr. Forbes B. Gordon, teacher, Karaka (for three months) ; Miss M. a Pasley, assistant, Rotorua; Miss Kate E. Vickery, pupil teacher, from Newton West to Waihi District High School; Miss Amy E. Wood, ipil teacher, from Northcoto to Newton VVest; Miss Helen M - McKay, pupil teacher, ivorthcote; Miss Mabel Barkfoy, pupil teacher, Hamilton West District High School. The committee recommended that school committees should be consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows: Komata (headmaster), Messrs. W. M. Gelling, W H. V. Hall, and J. F. Roberts; laupin (assistant), Miases H. Cormack, E. J. \\hitmore. and E. M. Hall; Manunui (assistant), Mrs, M. J. M. . Simeon. The Hoard was also asked to invite applications tor sole charge Katui and Arnnga schools and female assistant Parnell school. The committee recommended that the Raupo District School Committee be consulted in regard to the combination of the R*upo school half-time with the new ?c-hool at Ruawai. Recommendation was deferred in regard to the selection of teachers for sole chargo of Amodeo Bay, Waipu Cave household, and Purerua (substitute three months). The report was adopted. Edendnle School Tenders: Several tenders wero received for Edendale school, the lowest being £2896 in brick and £1990 in wood, while the grant available was £1788. It was decided to apply to the Department for a further grant. . Rerauera School District: The chairman said that at no distant date it would be necessary to provide another school between Kemuera and St. Eeliers Bay. As land was gomg up in value, and it would be necessary to get a site soon, he moved that the fcxecutive Committee bo instructed to make inquiries about a site. The motion was carried.

, wl Schools: - fti connection with the building of Waihi South school, tho chairman said two sites had been reported on, and since then a third had been suggested which seemed more suitable. He moved that the matter be deferred till the other site was reported upon, and that the maximum number of pupils be fixed at 340. The motion was carried. The secretary said that pending the construction of Waihi South school the Waihi main school was seriously overcrowded. The only way to prevent hardshin was to refuse admission to any new pupils at Waihi school until Waihi South school was built. The Board agreed to this course.

Hamilton District High School: It was agreed by the Board to apply for a grant for a separate building for Hamilton District High School.

_ Technical School: The resignation of Mr. IX Grant, instructor in woodwork at Whangarei Technical School, was accepted, and the Board resolved to forward a letter to Mr. Grant thanking him for his able services. Miss C. G. Butler was appointed teacher in training in cookery at Ponsonby Manual Training School. The Board resolved to apply for a grant for a building to accommodate the technical classes at Ham;!-
