A match was'fired at Penrose on Saturday between the Engineers and the Auckland Mounted Rifles, the contest resulting in a win for the former by seven points. The quarterly competition for the Public School Cadets' district belt, was fired yesterday, and resulted in the trophy being won by "Colour-Sergeant Casey, of the Waiokaraka school, with the excellent score of 51 points out of a possible 56, the score comprising nine bull's-eyes and live iuners out of the 14 shots fired, which is a record for the district. The runner-up was Sergeant Murphy, of Kauaeranga school, with 41 points, which entitles him to hold the Mayor's medal for the quarter. The conditions were seven shots each at lOOvils- and 200 yds. Following were the principal scores:--Colour-Sergeant Casey (Waiokaraka). 51; Sergeant Murphy (Kauaeranga). 41; Lieutenants Cowling and Downes (Waiokaraka), 39 each; Cadet Steward (Kauaeranga). 37; Bugler Cunningham and Cadet Smith (Waiokaraka}, 37 each; Lieutenant. Hutson (Kauaeranga), 36; Corporal Trainor (Tararu), 36; Serjeant Wells (Tararu), 33; Colour-Sergeant Hardman (Waiokaraka), 31. The shooting was carried out under the supervision of Major Newton, who complimented the winner and runner-up on their excellent shooting under somewhat, unfavourable weather conditions. MOUNTED RIFLES' CAMP The week's camp held by the Second Regiment Auckland Mounted Rifles at Hamilton was concluded on Saturday. The officers entertained a few friends on Friday evening at dinner in the camp at Major Bell's house, at the conclusion of which Captain Walker on behalf of the officers and men thanked Mrs. Bell for the many kindnesses shown to them. The regiment marched to Mr. Paterson's farm at Ngaruawahia on Friday, where the annual competition for the regimental shield took place. This was won by the D or Cambridge squadron, and now becomes the property of that company. In the evening the officers were examined by Captain Brown and the non-coms.
